Kaybaba :

Can we meet you Sir ?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

My name is Imam Abdulquadri, Im the Students Union Senate President. 500l Veterinary Medicine student.

Kaybaba:

The current S.U Senate Council, what giant stride has it achieved under you?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

I will always want to say first, Anywhere in the world where there is a legislative arm, The legislative arm is a microcosm of a congressthat is people that voted them in.It comprises of different assemblies, In university of ilorin for instance, we have 24 Constituencies comprising 15 faculties, 9 halls of residence,! from international Students, 1 from the Deaf Students Association. Having all these constituencies you will agree with me that every one is represented. one of the main things we have achieved at the SC under my leadership has been sustaining unity between the executives and other arms of leadership. We do this by maintaining stability and giving a framework to the executives. We have different people from different constituencies which diverse opinions and political affiliations, and it isvery important that I know how to manage and resolve their diverse opinions especially on the floor of the house when vital issues are being deliberated. It is also noteworthy to say that unlike the Execute council that formulate policies that are mostly seen at the fore front of every activity of the union, our own role is not to always be at the center or at the point of execution of projects rather we formulate policies and offer support to projects and activities to their activities.

Kaybaba:

Some weeks back, there was a report about an outing where the Unilorin Students council took second in a contest…Can you shed more light on that sir.
Sen. Abdulquadri:

Yes, on April 17th we were invited by the Students representative council of University of Ibadan S.U for their legislative summit. We went there with 17-man delegate. Our debate team came second behind the host team. Our two speakers were amazing and it was unsurprising that one of our speakers Sen. Oladejo Sheriffdeen emerged as the best speaker of the contest. It was a memorable outing and this also gave credence to the Unilorin Students union SC.

Kaybaba:

Following the 4th Legislative Sitting’s report where it was revealed that the SC under your leadership is planning to digitalise the Students Union constitution (The Compendium) , Can you talk more about this sir?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

During my first time at the senate council, under the Its your boy Led Senate, I realized the importance of the students union constitution ,this is because many a times you ll see people from my faculty and other faculties requesting for it and sometimes i lend it out to them when need arises. Many students are interested in the students union activities especially the compendium but only few have access to it. Even though there is always provision annually for the printing of some copies but you will agree with me that the copies cant go round. This necessitated the proposed move to digitize the compendium and make it available to everyone. This will make the constitution to be available to all unilorites and non unilorites who might be interested in it. Previous Administrations have done similar thing by making it available on the Flash specifically, it was introduced during the Comrade Ishowo Yakub led administration.

Kaybaba:

What modalities will this innovation follow?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

After wide deliberations from the principal officers of the current Students Union, We decided to throw it open to the house for deliberation and the Senators accepted after it. A committee has been set up to see to its implementation. The basic procedure would be the invitation of suitable App developers on campus to come submit their bidding, they will then be interviewed and the contract will be awarded to the best. We want to make sure we utilize App developers on campus as a way of promoting and developing them.

Kaybaba:

What are the greatest threat or Fear you have concerning this innovation?

Sen. Abdulquadri:

Among the many advantage of this innovation is that since we are in a global village, once this is digitized and made available in an app, it becomes open source. Union officials will be more accountable as everyone will know what is expected of them and they will always be reminded whenever they fail to uphold their duties. Unnecessarily alteration is a threat and if the digitization is not properly done people may alter it to suit their purpose and represent it in way they should not. Also we will have limited control over it once it goes digital; in the past we usually have delegates from other schools who do come to us to look into our constitution in a bid to formulate or improve on theirs. they usually give us credits and this mostly gives credence to us as a union but once the compendium is out as an app, anyone can just get it, download it and utilise it for whosoever purpose they want without giving us credits.

Kaybaba:

Away from the Students union Compendium Digitization, What would you like to be remembered for?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

Everybody always cherish legacy, I am this kind of person that prefers using myself as a yardstick to measure how far I’ve grown or improve. I won’t like my yesterday to be better than today. I always like to beat the old version of me. I basicall answer that by saying ” I will like to be remembered for my dutifulness and the Good leadership prowess i’ve demonstrated. Also, i will like to be remembered for my service to the union.”

Kaybaba:

How will you describe the relationship between the Students Union Senate council and the Executives?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

The relationship between us has been cordial even though there has been sometimes we have to disagree but most of the time we always learn to resolve all our differences. We understand that policies making is for the CEC, but when you make policies you are not making for yourself, you have to take it to the people who represents those you are making policies for. our own job is to look at it, ratify if need be and then hand it over to you to execute. Basically what usually lead to issue is what i will describe as overlapping of functions or over zealousness from some of them but we have always understand our differences. Our relationship is that of mutual respect and platonic in nature. The second |Semester is still young, but by the grace of God, we will laugh at the end of the day.

Kaybaba:

What projects should unilorites be expecting from the Senate council before the session runs out?

Sen. Abdulquadri:

As the Senate council, our fundamental role is making laws and complementing the efforts of the Executives. The only project i will say we have, will be the actualization of the proposed Digitization of the SU compendium.

Kaybaba:

Recently there was controversy about a letter or a supposed bill which was said to have been submitted to the clerk and the bill was not considered onthe floor of the house as expected by the writer?
Sen. Abdulquadri:

Concerning that, It was clearly enshrined in the compendium , The categories of bills have been stated: Wwe have Legislative bills-which is a bill that can be sponsored by lawmakers, Executive bills- which can be sponsored by union executive members and the third is the Private Bills- Which can be sponsored by students who are non-union officials. The supposed documents falls under the private bills. But what simply happened was that the document was submitted on Wednesday after the notification bearing the agenda of the sitting have been sent. So we could not deliberate on it simply because it’snot part of the agenda. And you will agree with me that the document was included in the agenda and deliberated upon during our last sitting. I will like to use this opportunity to implore all union members to always try and make verification and clarifications on burning issues before going on social media to criticism and vituperate us. We all have our respective integrities to preserve and meeting with concerned individuals to get the cause of events will save us from events which may create rancor.

Kaybaba:

What inspires you and Any Final words you may like to share especially to people that look up to?

Sen. Abdulquadri:

I will like to answer in the words of Abraham Lincoln , ” A house divided within itself would not stand”, this i simply interprets as a leader to mean that you must learn to understand and manage people cos people are from different backgrounds, places and with diverse ideologies. As a leader, you need to be very smart and you need to make a difference. On a Final note, The senate council is there to represent people, it is also important that people understands that we are different and not the same. What brought each and everyone of us together is the Union. We must always remember this at all times for in doing that, that’s there where we can triumph and make impact.
