The Radio Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU), North-Central Zone led by its Vice-President, Comrade Kabana Mohammed paid a courtesy call on the Director General, NBC, Mall. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu and his Management team, today 14th July, 2017 at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Receiving the delegation, Mall. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu welcomed the team to the Commission and pointed out that the Digital Switch over project is a major challenge for the NBC as an institution and is going to be a major development because it will change the face of television in the country.
Mall. Modibbo Kawu stated that ‘’ digital television is a part of the national process of making a sense of the digital economy for the Nigerian people’’. He noted that it will offer opportunity for young people in Nigeria to be able to participate in the new face of television development in terms of the creation of content and finding opportunities.
The DG, NBC, informed the delegation that the DSO will be done in phases, the next phase being one state each from the six-geo-political zones in the country. He emphasised that the NBC will need the buy-in of RATTAWU because they are the working people who will make the process work.
In his response, the leader of the delegation thanked the DG for the warm reception accorded them. He stated that the purpose of their visit was to congratulate the DG on the present stage of the DSO project and the synergy between the Commission and RATTAWU, and the support given by the DG to the broadcasting industry. Adding that the Union and NBC can work together for the DSO project to succeed.
Comrade Mohammed also pointed out that RATTAWU had gone ahead to emphasise on training and re-training of members who will man the stations in line with the DSO. He also expressed his appreciation to the DG and his Management team for extending the deadline of payment of debts owed to the Commission by stations.
The RATTAWU North-Central Vice-President, informed the DG and his team of their upcoming event ‘RATTAFEST’, a festival that brings together media and culture. He added that they were in the NBC to solicit support from the Commission for the successful hosting of RATTAFEST 2017 in Jos, Plateau State.
Mal. Modibbo Kawu in closing, assured the group that the Commission will be willing to assist in hosting RATTAFEST event in August.
